Chapter Eleven

I wasn’t satisfied with what I knew about the murder so far. I wished I hadn’t been so shocked about Gretchen telling us her husband was dead the morning we stopped by the workshop and that I would have paid more attention to my surroundings when I was inside the workshop. But of course, I was focused on John. And it’s not like Cade wouldn’t have found all he needed to know when he investigated the workshop. But he had said it was several days later that he figured out there had been what looked like a struggle. Cade knew what he was doing, but two pairs of eyes were better than one, right?

With that in mind, I stopped by Gretchen’s house to see what she was up to, and see if I could get back into the workshop. She smiled when she answered the door.

“Well, Rainey. How are you?”

I nodded. “I’m good, Gretchen. I just thought I’d stop by and see how you were doing. I hope I’m not intruding.”

She shook her head. “Of course not. Come on in. I’ve been sorting through things, trying to decide what to keep and what to get rid of. As you know, a New York City apartment isn’t going to be large, and I can’t take it all with me. Maybe in a year or two, we’ll be able to move to something larger.”

“Getting rid of things must be difficult,” I said. The McMillans owned a large house, at least twenty-five hundred square feet. I couldn’t imagine trying to downsize it all, especially in such a short time frame as she had in mind. The things in this house had come from a lifetime of her and her husband being together. How did you part with his things so soon after his death?

She sat down on the couch and nodded at the loveseat across from her. In between us was a coffee table stacked with books, photo albums, and small trinkets.

“It is hard. I never thought I would be in this position, but here I am. I’m going to make the best of it. If I get rid of all the stuff that doesn’t mean much to me, that will leave me with just the right things, right? Unfortunately, John was a big collector, and that’s throwing a wrench into my plans to be out of here by the end of the year.” She grinned. “But I’m excited about New York. So is Kaitlyn. Look what I found.” She picked up an open photo album and handed it to me. “These pictures are from when I was doing commercials. The director’s assistant took them on set. Look at how young I was.”

She was right. She had been young. And beautiful. But she hadn’t aged much, and she was still beautiful. I gazed at the pictures on the open pages. They showed her taking direction from someone who must have been the director, in the makeup chair, and talking to other actors.
