Chapter Eleven
I wasnât satisfied with what I knew about the murder so far. I wished I hadnât been so shocked about Gretchen telling us her husband was dead the morning we stopped by the workshop and that I would have paid more attention to my surroundings when I was inside the workshop. But of course, I was focused on John. And itâs not like Cade wouldnât have found all he needed to know when he investigated the workshop. But he had said it was several days later that he figured out there had been what looked like a struggle. Cade knew what he was doing, but two pairs of eyes were better than one, right?
With that in mind, I stopped by Gretchenâs house to see what she was up to, and see if I could get back into the workshop. She smiled when she answered the door.
âWell, Rainey. How are you?â
I nodded. âIâm good, Gretchen. I just thought Iâd stop by and see how you were doing. I hope Iâm not intruding.â
She shook her head. âOf course not. Come on in. Iâve been sorting through things, trying to decide what to keep and what to get rid of. As you know, a New York City apartment isnât going to be large, and I canât take it all with me. Maybe in a year or two, weâll be able to move to something larger.â
âGetting rid of things must be difficult,â I said. The McMillans owned a large house, at least twenty-five hundred square feet. I couldnât imagine trying to downsize it all, especially in such a short time frame as she had in mind. The things in this house had come from a lifetime of her and her husband being together. How did you part with his things so soon after his death?
She sat down on the couch and nodded at the loveseat across from her. In between us was a coffee table stacked with books, photo albums, and small trinkets.
âIt is hard. I never thought I would be in this position, but here I am. Iâm going to make the best of it. If I get rid of all the stuff that doesnât mean much to me, that will leave me with just the right things, right? Unfortunately, John was a big collector, and thatâs throwing a wrench into my plans to be out of here by the end of the year.â She grinned. âBut Iâm excited about New York. So is Kaitlyn. Look what I found.â She picked up an open photo album and handed it to me. âThese pictures are from when I was doing commercials. The directorâs assistant took them on set. Look at how young I was.â
She was right. She had been young. And beautiful. But she hadnât aged much, and she was still beautiful. I gazed at the pictures on the open pages. They showed her taking direction from someone who must have been the director, in the makeup chair, and talking to other actors.
